Negative keywords in Google Ads are terms or phrases that you can set to prevent your ad from being triggered by certain words or phrases. It’s like telling Google Ads, “Hey, if someone searches for these words, I don’t want my ad to show up.”

Here’s an example to make it clear. Let’s say you’re advertising a luxury hotel in Sydney. You want to attract tourists looking for a high-end experience. You might add negative keywords like “cheap,” “budget,” or “hostel” to your campaign. This way, when someone searches for “cheap hotels in Sydney,” your ad won’t show up, because that’s not the crowd you’re targeting.

Using negative keywords helps you focus your ads on the most relevant audience. It’s a bit like fishing with a net that has a special filter – you only catch the fish you want. This can save you money, as your ad won’t be shown to people who aren’t likely to be interested in what you’re offering, and it can also improve the overall performance of your Google Ads campaigns.

I’ve put together a bunch of negative keyword lists from different places online and from my own accounts. They’re sorted into categories so you can figure out if they’re the right ones to leave out of your Google Ads campaigns.
